Update monsters are glitched items that the game has a hard time rendering. The item could be anything, but occasionally one of those items are going to glitch out and turn into an update monster, and other people are able to pick up that glitched item as if the update monster was never there. For the situation in the screenshot, they're most likely glitched eggs, raw chicken, or feathers. Exiting the game and re-joining MIGHT fix/un-glitch them, I haven't tested that part yet.
in the time me, Bansheeplant, and Alexandra have been adventuring, I've noticed sand, cobblestone, dirt, logs, mob drops, and bows have appeared as an update monster on at least one of our sceens before.
BlueTangs Rock3, you're right I saw stuff including block and mobs turn into Update game monsters.
However from what I've experienced from update monsters is that they're actually not related to a glitched mob, or a new mob without a proper AI and model (as unfortunate and boring as that sounds), but are just glitched items. This can also explain why they don't actually move around, and why they sometimes appear while lots of sand/gravel is falling or while terraforming, or why in your case, are appearing in your chicken farm.
Guys this glitch will be fixed.

oh. Whenever me or my friends see Update Monsters, it's always a glitched item for at least one of us. Maybe currently Update Monsters are glitched items that show up as this new ghost mob as a placeholder or glitch in the code, but when ghosts are added it'll be different. So what are these ghost mobs like exactly? Are they the PoC replacement for Ghasts, or are we getting our first PoC exclusive mob along with Ghasts being added too in the future?

true that. Except Zombies, since they have a female skin for the baby variants(strangely not for adult zombies though). Other than that, the mobs are kind of like earthworms, being neither just male or female, but are kinda both, meaning any 2 of the same species can breed without gender being a consern.

O.O G-G-G-GHOST! Wait did that ghost have a..... Let's just say ghost baguette? O.o man this is a scary glitch, I miss the simple "update game" item/ block, ghosts should totally come to poc though would be an epic mob!
