Use a flexible strategy. Before doing anything, look around and try to figure out what others are doing.
Take actions depending on what they are trying to do.
1. When they try to use their shovels to make others fell, you can run quickly behind or side to them and make them also fall by digging the snow block below the attacker. (You will eliminate 2 players at once then.) Pay attention, don't allow others to use the same tactics against you.
2. If you see lots of shovel fighting, try to keep a distance and wait others to beat themselves up, so you have to deal with less opponents in the end.
3. If you see someone charging towards you, you can dig a 2-3 wide hole and try to make them fall. (Take lag into account when you try this, they will hit you with the shovel badly when they can avoid falling.)
4, You can try to dig the maximum size of hole around you, but this has serious drawbacks: many players dig around themselves so they "stuck" on an 1x1 island and when the time runs out, the only remaining players are going to have fireballs... you have nowhere to run to dodge the fireballs incoming. Also it takes much time to complete the island and when opponents figure out what you do, they can easily run up to you and hit you with the shovel while you are digging.
5. Look who are your opponents when you start a new round, if there are someone you played in the previous rounds, try to use different strategy if they beat you, or use the same if you won against them. You can chose to fight the stronger player first and leave the others for later, or let them kill the nubs while you do the same, so you can face them at the endgame, but don't loose sight of them if you choose the second option.
6. Don't jump into holes. Sounds obvious, but lag complicates this one too, sometimes players seem to "float" mid air, not falling into lava, you can still hit them however. Move in zigzag patterns, or in less predictable patters, so they are less easily know where you are going to go and the harder they can dig you a while where you would fall. Always be in motion, never stop, but watch out for holes.
7. If you are on low health, try to stay out of further fights, you can heal if you keep the distance from others.
8. Stay out of crowds, someone will hit you, taking hearts or digging holes near you for sure.
9. Start jumping after the arena loaded but before the game screen appears fully, because there are 2-3 seconds of delay and if you arrive after the game is started and you just stand there, they will dig you down most certainly.
10. When you see someone chasing and hitting others, you can also chase them because they are less likely to look at other players and are more vulnerable. Be careful and react when they turn back and dig defensive holes behind them.
I hope these tips can help you play better and make you a better opponent, because I win the games 90% or more all the time. XD
Admins: do you mind considering the creation of a Leaderboard for Spleef Mode, similar to the clans' leaderboard? It could boost the competition and popularity of this minigame mode.
I tried this yesterday and honestly it's not about strategy at all, it's just about doing what you have to in the moment based on other players around you.
ꆜᦔꫀ᧒ꪖ ꪜꪊ乂 ቿꋖቿ 乂ϟᏩჩЄϟꆜ, you said: "it's just about doing what you have to in the moment based on other players around you."
Which is vague and overly general, moreover it does not help much. On the other hand I literally explained in detail (in 10 points) what are the possible reactions that one can perform to possibly win the game (tactics). I won't go into details about how tactics and strategy are different, but if you think I stated that the game is "about strategy", then you totally misunderstood, what I tried to say and missed my point at the same time.
ꆜᦔꫀ᧒ꪖ ꪜꪊ乂 ቿꋖቿ 乂ϟᏩჩЄϟꆜ, my points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 are detailing exactly "how" to read people's actions and how to read to them, so thank you for the summary :D
Well if I'm not wrong why would I lie and say I am??? The reality is if you have to resort to calling names to have ANYTHING on me you're likely the one that's wrong. :D
You are the one calling me names. The word I used has a precise meaning: it applies to those who has a strong opinion on everything and they despise anyone else who has a different opinion, morover they can't be reasoned with, that is never admit they were wrong. I could show at least 3 different points where you were wrong by clear logic and you were using bad disrespectful tone towards me, that definition exactly matches you, like it or not.

It's less of a strategy game more of a puzzle game.
You have to read people

I don't read rants from ignorant buffoons... :D
ꆜᦔꫀ᧒ꪖ ꪜꪊ乂 ቿꋖቿ 乂ϟᏩჩЄϟꆜ, yeah just do that. And never ever admit you are wrong, like all bigots do. *thumbsup*

Is that also too simple to understand?

It's not an opinion, I'm just right. Catch up
Best example, my point proven. Thanks.

Caxby.27, sounds interesting. We will consider it.
Caxby.27, after the thorough discussion we decided to add the Leaderboard to the Spleef mode in one of the future updates.
POCAdmin2, will there be a Prize for the top player(s)?
