So quick question do mobs spawn in dark high places? And does it have to be a natural block to spawn them or just something random like cobblestone?
Mobs can spawn on any block sufficiently dark, regardless of height or origin, though there is certain types of blocks they don't spawn on. Cobblestone is fine, but they don't spawn on leaves or lillipads, or any kind of wall or fence.
Trying to build some sort of mob farm?
