Although it's a weird change, I see it as a beneficial one since now it would be harder for someone to hunt your base down (since before if you were the only one in a biome for miles, people could easily single you out and see that you lived in a particular biome just from looking at the portal map since your biome would say that there was at least one player present, while all the surrounding biomes would say "0").

No, but witches can throw splash harming potions after you're already poisoned, which could potentially kill you if the poison brought you to half a heart before the harming potion splashes on you.
