Studies from PinguLabs have found that pots take some time to break with an efficiency 5 pickaxe, like.. Some time as in 5 seconds or something, and also with the "crawling" feature being added, it's possible to create an "elevator" leading to a space which the player can hopefully fit in, above where the player left to do the glitch. Coal blocks and nether wart blocks can be broken by hand quickly if your not updated to 5.1

That elevator trick already existed in some form, because swimming has been implemented long ago, so you could have already entered a height-of-one tunnel... and when you stoped swimming, guess what happens :D
