My guess is, there adding what they do, so sword does damage, potions you drink when you hold screen, that sorta thing, they add items into the game before they add what they do a lot of the time, I think this is a way of teasing you and sort of giving you a heads up of what's to come.
Kieranb, forgot to mention, as the items have no properties yet, just an item property, they will be known as "missing" and may not actually be ere after the update to make them the final item. That's why you get a missing block.
