Probably anvils I feel like at some point they looked like anvils. Try creative mode and see if it looks different.
If it's that one spawnzone that I think it is, it's likely a wood-type block, as farther out in that biome there's a structure with walls full of update blocks and they had the properties of a wood block; the walking/breaking sound, and the fact that you could mine it fastest with an axe, the ones in the spawnzone are probably the same or an at least similar block.
Oh yeah you can also use it for fuel which I tried maybe it's a log?
