I get why they removed it it's too OP and probably did mess up the diamond system. After all people got so much their are still players with lots of diamonds saved from those today. I'm actually glad they removed them it would be just too easy to get diamonds.

it was quite ironic, as they immediately added Ore regen after the diamond Temple's removal, though as Solverlabs didn't address the problem quick enough, Ore Regen became vital for the PoC community, so it's important that Ore Regen remains in-game. However I did wish that non-ore blocks like stone, dirt, gravel, etc. wouldn't regenerate though.
